Son, daughter of corona patient also test positive in Azamgarh

Son and daughter on an elderly man, found infected with Covid-19 virus on April 8, tested positive for coronavirus on Monday, said district magistrate (DM) Nagendra Prasad Singh.

With this, the number of total positive cases of the deadly virus in Azamgarh district reached 6.

“The report of 30-year-old son and 24-year-old daughter of the patient has been received. Both have tested positive,” said the DM while adding, “Nayapura Sikathi area in Mubarakpur district has been declared corona hotspot since all six positive patients are from this area.”

Of the total six patient, three returned to the district after attending Tablighi Jamat event in Delhi recently.

Singh said all the positive cases of coronavirus are undergoing treatment at the isolation ward in the government medical college.

Akhilesh questions efficacy of Team-11

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav questioned the efficacy of Team-11 set up by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Questioning the detention of members of Tablighi Jamaat who attended the Nizamuddin markaz meet in Delhi, the SP chief said, “We hear only about the spate of meetings of Team-11 but nothing is known about results of the meeting. Team-11 should find out why the foreign Jamaat members were given visa to travel to India.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Akhilesh said that the team should also look into the number of tests for detecting possible COVID-19 patients and also the plight of people affected by the lockdown.

The SP chief alleged that due to the fear of coronavirus, there was negligence in treatment of common people. He said that while providing personal protective equipment to medics, the government should ensure that medical staff do not ignore any patient due to fear of contacting coronavirus.

Akhilesh said, “It is sad that a doctor in Kanpur had to lose his son due to unavailability of ambulance and stretcher and other medical equipment help at LLR Hospital.”

The former chief minister of UP said the state government should focus its attention on efficient management of quarantine centres.

He said the shortage of sanitiser, masks and sanitation in Azamgarh medical college had added to the vulnerability of patients, doctors and paramedics.

He also demanded an objective review of the relief fund for COVID-19 and regular review of government funds.

The SP chief alleged that the supply chain of essential commodities in Kanpur had collapsed due to lockdown, adding to the woes of the common man already suffering from job losses and economic slowdown.

He claimed that basics like milk and bread were not available in Kanpur, while the poor were suffering due to the shortage of medicines.

Extending his support to measures taken by the Yogi Adityanath government to contain the virus spread, Akhilesh said, “I have no objection to the lockdown but the manner of its enforcement should be humane and it should not cause agony to the common man.”

51 new corona cases in UP, 47 attended Jamaat congregation

Uttar Pradesh on Friday reported 51 new coronavirus positive cases, 47 of them being members of Tablighi Jamaat who had attended a Nizamuddin markaz meet in Delhi in mid-March.

With the fresh addition, the total number of coronavirus positive cases rose to 172 in UP.

The 47 Tablighi Jamaat members have been quarantined in 14 districts of the state.

Reports of the highest number of 12 cases of Jamaat members testing positive came from Saharanpur, followed by six from Kanpur, five each from Agra and Meerut, four from Firozabad, three from Azamgarh and the rest from other districts.

“We have ordered the sample test of all Jamaat members who attended the Delhi function or who came in contact with the attendees,” Principal Secretary (Health) Amit Mohan Prasad told media persons in Lucknow on Friday.

Prasad also said that aggressive containment process was underway in affected districts while surveillance was also underway to find out  if there were any fresh cases.

“On Thursday, eight labs across the state tested 465 samples and soon testing facilities would start at Jhansi Medical College. Level 1 Covid hospitals have started functioning in all districts while six Level 2 Covid hospitals would be notified by Saturday,” he said.

Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi confirmed that till date 1,203 members of Tablighi Jamaat or those with links with them were identified across the state and the tests on 897 of them were conducted.

Awasthi further said that 297 foreign Tablighi Jamaat attendees too were detected and passports of 228 had been confiscated while 35 FIRs were lodged against them in 16 districts of UP.

The additional chief secretary said  that a massive search was being made at all religious places and people from there were being taken out for test and to be quarantined.

He said that in Lucknow too, the police sealed the Sadar Bazaar area and were searching for people at a local mosque.

Speaking on growing attacks on men in uniform for enforcing lockdown, Awasthi said that the government was very serious over the issue and strictest action would be taken again the offenders.

“All districts administrations have been asked to monitor law and order through use of drones  and DMs and SPs would be held responsible for escape of any quarantined or isolated person,” he added.

The additional chief secretary said that soon the chief minister would hold video conferencing with religious leaders from districts to seek assistance for ensuring lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“A high-level committee headed by a senior High Court judge has decided to release248 juvenile inmates jailed for petty crimes in UP,” he said.

On Friday, an FIR was registered against 57 foreign nationals for attending Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi and withholding information from authorities.

Besides, 20 people from Saharanpur attended the event and they were quarantined in Delhi.

How Yogi’s UP turned down its poor amid an ill-planned lockdown

People are plagued by despair and the fear of hunger

A mix of fear and mistrust is forcing people to leave despite the Uttar Pradesh government’s assurance that they will be taken care of.

“I have no money. My phone has no charge. How will I survive in this city?” says Tribhuvan (uses just one name) walking towards his home in Lucknow’s Industrial area of Chinhat.

Around 1 pm on Monday, Tribhuvan with his 10-year-old son boarded a bus some five kilometres from his home. “It was a government bus. We were told we would be taken home”, says this native of Azamgarh who has been working at a shop that sells cycles in Lucknow for the last five years.

The bus that Tribhuvan boarded, roamed the city for almost an hour, before it was asked to turn around from Indira Canal near Lucknow’s neighbouring district of Baranaki. The bus rode for 30 more minutes before emptying its occupants at the Shaheed Path. This reporter met Tribhuvan when he was trudging back to his rented room in Lucknow from Shaheed Path.

Tribhuvan is still speaking when another bus begins to empty its occupants on the Shaheed Path—an outer bypass road that diverts traffic from Kanpur and Ayodhya. This 23km-long road is one of Lucknow's most photographed markers of development. 

As this reporter starts taking pictures of people walking away from the bus, a policeman intervenes. “Baith jao, baith jao- sab milega” (Stay put, you will get everything) he extols the occupants of the bus. On being queried on why the buses were being stopped he says he does not know. “Do you see me stopping anyone? I am trying to put people back on the bus,” he says.

The occupants rush back—some climbing through the windows not wanting to be left behind. “They have stopped us four times”, “They promised they would get us home”, “They said we would be tested but nothing happened”, “Can you please tell the government we want to go home”—people shout in the direction of this reporter.

The bus driver says that he was directed to go to Bahraich. He has no answers for why he stopped.

A second policeman is more forthcoming.

“The government has built temporary shelters for people. There was one at Shaheed Path, but it is full now. So these people will now be taken to Indira Gandhi Pratishthan”, he says with reference to one of Lucknow’s most sought after venues to host weddings and exhibitions. The bus lunges forward again, turns around and crawls to that destination.

The trust deficit between the government and its citizens that began with the announcement of an ill-prepared total lockdown runs deep. “The government has made empty promises. Look at the khichdi they are serving us- you will have to fish for rice in it. Back home at least we will have something to eat”, says Tribhuvan whose monthly income is Rs 4,000.

Behind him, hordes of people march on enveloped in the despair that the government has abandoned them and plagued by the fear of hunger.

FIR against 4 in UP for spreading rumours on social media

New Delhi: An FIR was registered against four people, including former Students’ Union President of Allahabad University Richa Singh, for spreading rumor on social media platforms about the availability of buses to reach several districts amid lockdown.

“An FIR has been registered against Richa Singh, Neha, Akhilesh and Anand. On Saturday these people had written on Facebook and other social media sites stating that buses will be available for Azamgarh and other districts at 6 am on Sunday,” said Colonelganj Police in a statement.

“The matter came to the notice of the police late on Saturday and on Sunday morning people started gathering at the bus stand,” it added.

“It is alleged that on Saturday it was written on Facebook and other social sites that buses will depart for Azamgarh and other districts at 6 am on Sunday,” the police added.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had earlier reported a total of 1024 confirmed COVID-19 cases in India and 27 deaths due to the deadly virus. (ANI)

In the on-going Budget session of Uttar Pradesh State Legislature, a piquant situation arose for the government several times when members of the treasury benches supported the opposition. They sometimes came up with more startling facts and figures than the opposition members inviting cold stares from the parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna.

Early this week, when Sushma Verma (BSP) raised the issue of stray cattle and how it is destroying the crop, the government came up with the answer that there is no stray cattle menace. Animal Husbandry Minister Chaudhry Laxmi Narain said that stray cattle are being kept in cowsheds or state-run animal shelters.

Even as the minister was justifying his claims, Surendra Singh, BJP lawmaker from Ballia, stood up and said that issues related to cows should not be dealt with casually. “This government says that it is protecting cows, but the fact is that I have seen stray dogs devouring the carcass of a cow. It was a pathetic sight.  A cow died on the streets and then its body was being devoured by dogs. This shows that the government has failed to fulfil the promise it has made to the people,” he said.

As the members spoke, opposition members thumped the desk while the stunned minister tried to bring the situation under control saying that he has no information about this incident.

In the Legislative Council, BJP’s Vijay Bahadur Pathak raised the issue of rampant corruption, prevalent under his own party’s government in the Azamgarh Development Authority (ADA).

Highlighting the scarcity of staff in the Azamgarh Development Authority, Pathak said the entire district is witnessing illegal construction creating a big problem for the free flow of traffic movement.

Pathak said that even the government departments were engaged in illegal construction and the common man has been running here and there to get the map of his house cleared from the ADA. Pathak requested his own government to immediately hire more employees in the ADA and take necessary action so that the illegal construction could be stopped.

When contacted, Pathak, who is also the state general secretary of the party, said that as a legislator he has the responsibility to raise people’s issue in the House (Legislative Council). “My Government is doing its work effectively. There are some people with vested interests who are throwing a spanner in the good work being done by the Yogi Government. I only raised that issue in the Vidhan Parishad,” he said.

Leader of Opposition in State Assembly Ram Govind Chaudhry said, “In a state where even ruling party legislators are saying that there is corruption in the government, what more proof do you need for the misgovernance under the present regime?”

Priyanka storms Akhilesh'' citadel, meets kin of jailed anti-CAA protestors

Azamgarh (UP), Feb 12 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday visited Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav parliamentary constituency Azamgarh and met family members of jailed anti-CAA protesters, asserting that raising voice in a democracy was not a crime.

Accusing the BJP governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh of trying to destroy the Constitution, she dubbed both governments as "anti-poor and anti-people".

Addressing people at Bilhariaganj locality here from the rooftop of her SUV, Priyanka Gandhi said, "Whatever happened with you was wrong, was an injustice. All of us will stand against the injustice. The government which is at the Centre, and the one which is in UP, is anti-people and anti-poor, and is working to destroy the Constitution.

"If you and we do not save it, the Constitution will be destroyed," she cautioned the people.

"You have seen the BJP government in Uttarakhand said the reservation is not a constitutional right," she said, alleging that the state government was talking of destroying the Constitution.

"You all have to stand up because all the laws which they are planning to bring in are not against one community, but against the entire Constitution," she said amid slogan shouting by the crowd.

Asserting that the Congress party will stand with peaceful protesters, the party general secretary said, "I heard the women folk. I had gone to Bijnor, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Lucknow and Varanasi and other places where the police and the administration committed atrocities. A report was drafted by our party and given to the NHRC."

She said she would also send names of policemen who committed atrocities in Azamgarh.

"The Congress party stands by you today, it will stand by you tomorrow, and will continue to stand by you until you get justice," she added.

Several Muslim women had staged a protest at Maulana Jauhar Park area here last week against the amended Citizenship Act and the proposed creation of a National Register of Citizens (NRC) but were dispersed by the police.

An FIR was registered against 35 identified and over 100 unidentified people involved in the protests that day.

Of them, 20 people were arrested, police had said.

This is the Congress general secretary''s second visit to eastern UP in less than a week after her Varanasi trip on Sunday on the occasion of Ravidas Jayanti.

Six cops from whose custody accused escaped in Varanasi suspended

The Mumbai Police suspended six policemen after an accused, booked in a fraud case, in their custody allegedly escaped when they took him for a hearing to Varanasi. The accused, who was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch, managed to persuade the officials to take him to his hometown in Azamgarh for a family function and fled from the back door of his residence, police said.

Police have identified the six suspended policemen as Assistant Inspector Gajanan Chormal, Constables Rambhau Chakor, Anil Mahajan, Balu Mahajan, Sandeep Shinde and Avinash Nagre.

According to police, the six policemen and the accused, identified as Manoj Singh, left Mumbai on February 9. They were to produce Manoj before the Azamgarh court the next day, following which they booked a train ticket the same evening.

Police said after the court appearance, Manoj persuaded three of the policemen to take him to his native place in the evening on the pretext of a family function and fled after they reached there. 

Late on February 10, the three policemen, posted at the local arms department of the Mumbai Police, informed the police in Azamgarh that Manoj had escaped, after which they began a search operation, police added. 

An FIR was filed at Deedarganj police station under sections 223 (escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by public servant) and 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code. 

After a preliminary inquiry, the three policemen, who escorted Manoj to Azamgarh, were arrested for illegally taking him to his native place. The remaining three policemen, who stayed back in Varanasi, are yet to be traced. 

The arrested policemen were later released on bail. A senior IPS officer from the Mumbai Police confirmed the suspension and refused to further comment on the matter.

"Always Be My Brave Girl": Priyanka Gandhi's Letter To 6-Year-Old

A six-year-old girl in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, has received a surprise letter and gifts from Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Anabia Imaan received the handwritten letter and gifts - including a school bag, a teddy bear, a lunch box and chocolates - on Wednesday afternoon, reports Deccan Herald.  

Priyanka Gandhi, 48, had met Anabia last week when she visited family members of jailed anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protesters in Azamgarh. Anabia had been present at the protest site with her aunt when police had forcibly removed the protestors.

During her meeting with the Congress leader, the six-year-old had broken down when asked how she was doing. A video of Priyanka Gandhi consoling her had been widely shared online.

In her letter, signed "Priyanka Aunty", the Congress leader asked Anabia to be a brave girl and call her whenever she wanted to.

"Dear Anabia, I have bought a few things for you. I hope you like them," she wrote in Hindi. "Always remain my 'brave girl' and call me whenever you want to. Lots of love, Priyanka Aunty."

According to National Herald, the letter and gifts were delivered to Anabia by the head of the Uttar Pradesh-Congress minority cell, Shahnawaz Alam.

Priyanka Gandhi had visited Azamgarh last Wednesday. Asserting that the Congress would stand with peaceful protesters, the party general secretary said, "I heard stories of women. Not many in AIMIM would miss a call from Asaduddin Owaisi. But Kailash Kumar Gautam (34), who won the recent zila panchayat elections from Azamgarh, was not around when his party chief called up to congratulate him on his win.

“I was busy with some work and I missed the call and did not call back. Then our state president Shaukat told me that Owaisi saheb had called me to congratulate for the victory,” he told The Indian Express.

Gautam created stir after getting elected as AIMIM candidate from Ward number 32 of Azamgarh, which is SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Lok Sabha constituency. Now, being taken seriously, AIMIM is even considering Gautam for the 2017 Assembly polls in the state.

Already, the party wants Gautam to address public meetings so that he can be projected as the AIMIM mascot for its Dalit-Muslim combination, with its slogan ‘Jai Bheem, Jai Meem’. “Owaisi saheb had told party workers that it is a good sign to start from Azamgarh… He will visit us soon,” he said.

A first-time entrant in politics, Gautam works as a salesman in a private company in Azamgarh. After deciding to enter the fray, he preferred to contest as a AIMIM candidate. “I approached AIMIM state president Shaukat Ali through our local president Kalim Jamei. They chose me as the candidate,” he said.

“There are a good number of Dalits and a few Muslims in my ward. For me, the Dalit-Muslim combination worked. AIMIM gave me a platform to raise my voice for these two communities. I gave no thought about joining any other party,” Gautam said.

He added: “If I had contested as a SP candidate, there was no chance of winning. Muslims readily supported me and Dalits too had no apprehension, as AIMIM also raised their issues.”

On contesting the Assembly polls, Gautam said: “With our combination of Dalit-Muslim intact, our party stands a chance.”

Supporting panchayat candidates helped party: BJP

Lucknow:- BJP today defended its decision to officially support candidates in the just concluded Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls, claiming that it “benefited” the party 10 times more than expected.

“Decision to contest pachayat polls was a political decision taken during state executive meeting at Mathura. It was decided that the party will contest all elections even that of cooperatives,” state BJP president Laxmi Kant Bajpai told reporters here.

He also rejected report that the party lost in Jayapur village adopted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi.

“From Jayapur two block development committee members backed by the party have won,” he said.

Bajpai claimed the BJP was the only party that officially declared the list of candidates its supported.

“We have even disclosed the number of winning candidates backed by the BJP. We have won 536 seats which is 10 times higher than the past, when party workers used to contest the polls unofficially,” he said.

The state president said that contesting panchayat polls infused fresh blood, provided new youth leadership to the party and it got success in entering even at the lowest level.

“Ask SP and BSP. Did they declare the list of their candidates? Now there is a competition between the two and they are claiming even independent candidates as their own which is immoral,” he said.

Bajpai said that SP lost both the seats to BSP in a Azamgarh village, which has been adopted by SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.

“A number of relatives and family members of ministers and senior SP leaders lost. If they have any morality left then they should resign or the government should drop them,” he demanded.

While accusing the state government on failing on several fronts, the BJP state president demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

“He should resign on the basis of inefficiency and SP supremo should replace him with some other person,” he said.

SP suffers jolt in UP panchayat polls, BSP fares well

know: Ruling Samajwadi Party suffered a jolt in pockets of Uttar Pradesh with many relatives of ministers and senior leaders losing in the zila panchayat elections while BJP-supported candidates won only in 8 of the 48 seats in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Varanasi 

As ballots cast in the four-phase polling were counted today, Opposition BSP emerged as the surprise front-runner in the elections with most of the candidates it supported, registering victory.

In Varanasi's Jayapur, the village adopted by Modi, BJP candidate Arun Singh was defeated by BSP's Ramesh Tiwari.

The SP claimed to have won 25 seats in Varanasi district while Congress won 2, BSP 3, BJP ally Apna Dal 4 and Independents 6. In the last elections, BJP had won 3 seats.

The panchayat elections are not contested on party symbols and major parties chose not to officially announce the candidates it had endorsed.

Polling was held for 3,112 posts of district panchayats and 77,576 membership post in block panchayats and counting was done at 819 block headquarters amid tight security.

BJP, which had supported candidates in zila panchayat and kshetra panchayat polls for the first time, could not make a significant impact.

The results assume significance as they have come just about a year before the assembly elections.

BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said, "The results indicate that people of the state, especially in villages, have decided to bid goodbye to the corrupt and inefficient Samajwadi Party government."

Accusing the ruling SP of misusing government machinery, he said that a review of the results would be done for which report has been sought from every district.

Samajwadi Party, however, discounted reports of losing the polls with its spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary claiming that the electorate have approved the government's policies and programmes during last three-and-a-half years of its rule.

He said people have rejected BJP in a big way.

In Azamgarh, the Lok Sabha seat represented by SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, the party-supported candidate was defeated even in Tamausi village, which has been adopted by Mulayam.

Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen opened its account in Azamgarh by winning a seat in Maksudia.

State Election Commission said that after holding the elections of the Kshetra and district panchayat members in four phases, it would now prepare for the crucial pradhan and village panchayat polls in four phases from November 27 to December 9 with counting of votes on December 12. Notification for the pradhan polls would be issued on November 7.

UP panchayat election results a boost for BSP

"It was decided that the party will contest all elections even that of cooperatives", state BJP president Laxmi Kant Bajpai told reporters here.

As ballots cast in the four-phase polling were counted today, Opposition BSP emerged as the surprise front-runner in the elections with most of the candidates it supported, registering victory.

"The results are a clear signal that the people are favouring the development-oriented politics and governance of (Chief Minister) Akhilesh Yadav", party spokesman and cabinet minister Rajendra Chowdhary said.

Though several of the senior UP politicians of all the political parties have got success in helping their kins to win the elections, but on the other hand a few of them had to lick the dust.

Panchayat polls are not fought on party symbols but the contestants alwasy are always influenced or backed by a few political leaders.

Likewise, there is reason for alarm for the BJP as candidates supported by the party have been routed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi. BJP claims to have won 535 and Congress 81 out of 1500-odd it had declared its candidates for while SP didn't official announce the list of candidates it was supporting.

The results assume significance as they have come just about a year before the assembly elections.

Om Mathur, BJP party in-charge has convened a meeting in Lucknow on November 3 to discuss the results.

Accusing the ruling SP of misusing government machinery, he said that a review of the results would be done for which report has been sought from every district.

A candidate supported by Asaduddin Owaisi's Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen or MIM, has won a seat in Azamgarh, the parliamentary constituency of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh -- touted as a semi-final ahead of the next assembly elections - have jolted both the Congress and the BJP. Notification for the pradhan polls would be issued on November 7.
